Yoga for Performance

Yoga for Performance

The demand of performance sport puts athletes, staff and coaches in a ‘switched on’ state a lot of the time. Cortisol levels will be higher for longer, and as humans, we need to build a toolkit that brings cortisol down when we don’t want to be ‘switched on’. This involves stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system. Movement, breathing, mindfulness & more awareness of the body-mind connection helps individuals to understand themselves better & self-regulate more effectively - both in sport & wider life.

Some of the wider benefits of yoga for performance include:

  • Creating a relaxed state before bed, leading to better sleep

  • Lowering cortisol levels, resulting in better switch off, restoration & recovery

  • Creating longevity in physical wellbeing whilst in sport & beyond

  • Creating more self-awareness of the body-mind connection to self-regulate more effectively, especially in higher stress moments

  • Strengthening the diaphragm for cardiovascular and recovery gains

  • Building a toolkit & learning breathing exercises to keep calm and present in pressured moments

  • Building the ability to choose a response instead of reacting.
