Creating High Performing People through Hybrid Performance Environments

Single Focus Performance Environment - Environments with the sole purpose of winning. All decisions are centred around the win.

Hybrid Performance Environments - Environments or organisations that have a dual, or multi focus of creating sporting performance (winning), in alignment with something else, for example here, building positive well-being to optimise humans for performance. Decisions are aligned to both. There is the belief and understanding that they are interconnected and that one, when done effectively, enables the other.

Better people make better performers.

High performing people aren’t just those people who can technically and tactically understand and play the game. The most effective coaches and most coachable athletes, the greatest leaders, and those who stay in sport the longest, are those people who:

  • Maximise relationships, can communicate effectively & manage conflict within the team.

  • Are receptive to feedback, open minded to learning, self-sufficient & who build the ability to take risks at critical moments.

  • Understand the balance of making decisions to build their physical and mental health for longevity in career, as well as for the immediate moment.

  • Develop strong support mechanisms and are competent at emotional regulation, self-management of allostatic load, ensuring maximum availability.

  • Have a strong sense of self, identity and purpose within sport and beyond it. They are more than ‘just’ an athlete or coach.

  • Understand the need for balance and are able to flex it to ensure step back, refill the tank, then step back into sport ready.

  • Are equipped to mentally and emotionally manage themselves with pressures, demand, social media, and the influence of the wider sporting ecosystem

  • Are flexible and are ready for the multi-layered transitions experienced in different phases of a sporting career.

All of the skillsets above fall into 8 constructs of well-being. When skillsets in these areas are developed, people feel good, function well and are ready to pursue potential. Hybrid performance programmes enable high performing people, who in turn become successful, sustainable athletes and teams.

The Work

Working collaboratively with head coaches and leadership to build a bespoke strategy to create a hybrid performance environment. The work is tailored and bespoke and includes.

  • This work involves conducting an analysis of the sporting programme as a whole (from a hybrid performance perspective) & providing feedback of the analysis to leadership.

The analysis will provide a rounded, neutral viewpoint of the current well-being areas of strength, opportunity for development & any conflict that may be in existence.

With this information, you can make informed choices around in what ways the programme can evolve best.

  • Creating a hybrid performance environment can only be successful if it is driven by you - you have to believe in it, drive it and own it.

I would therefore coach you to gain understanding around the themes in the analysis, on what you perceive to be important when it comes to athlete well-being, where it is strong in the programme and where you see there to be opportunity to develop.

  • From the analysis, and coaching, I would then design a strategy, bespoke to the organisation’s strengths and untapped opportunities.

The strategy, will be designed with the following concepts:

    • Systems led

    • The whole sport ecosystem

    • Specificity to gender

    • Structured and measurable implementation.

Delivery of this work can also include facilitating group professional development sessions with wider coaches & staff

Over the past year, I have been working with Sian to develop a ‘what’ and ‘why’ for our programme. We have won every title available and are competing in the top tiers of our leagues - so it was important for us to step back and look at what it is we want to do next & how we want to do it. We are coming to the end of our plans where we aim to create a sustainable programme which is aligned with our direction and values. Through the coaching, Sian is working with me to create a self-sufficient programme. This is allowing me to be an effective leader & coach, in which I am able to facilitate and enable the growth of others - staff and athletes, with their own strengths and leadership.
